It is a Deemed University under section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. Since the inception of main campus in Mesra (Ranchi) in 1955, BIT has opened extension centres in Lalpur (Ranchi), Allahabad, Kolkata, Noida, Jaipur, Chennai, Patna and Deoghar, and overseas extension centres in Bahrain, Muscat (Oman), Ras al-Khaimah (UAE) and Mauritius.

Qualification: NET-JRF / Lectureship / SLET / Ph.D. / M.Phil / M.E. / M.Tech. in Information Science/ Information Technology / Library Science / Library & Information Science .Candidate who are not qualified NET-JRF / Lectureship / SLET/ Ph.D. / M.Phil / M.E. / M.Tech in above mentioned disciplines but M. Sc / MLIS/ M.LIB.Sc. in the discipline mentioned with a minimum of 55% marks may be considered for the post of Project Fellow with a consolidated salary of Rs.8000- p.m.
